Firstly because it weakens the strongest rival and secondly because he might take time to work due to gardening, so there could be a margin where no one will benefit from Newey at the start of the regulations cycle, neither Red Bull nor Ferrari.

I don't think Alonso will be this lucky, and even if Newey joins AM, I doubt Alonso will benefit from it. This will be a move for the post-Alonso era. Kinda feel like Newey will retire or go to Ferrari, Hamilton is that lucky but we will see.
